Frosted Leaves"- Robbi Birch- photograph- 8"x8"- $160
ROBBI (ROBERTA) BIRCH: "Artist" is not a label I would attach to myself. Nature and creation are the artists here. I am an observer - of people, the environment, and what's around me. The small things in nature intrigue me with their complexity, structure, place in the ecosystem, and their beauty. This is what I try to capture, at least in part, whenever the opportunity arises.
Frosted leaves are common, mundane, and temporary. However, they can also be beautiful. Holding onto a moment of beauty through a photograph allows us to observe a subject again and again. A photo gives us the chance to ruminate about it, learn from it, absorb something new to us. The camera only catches a brief moment of time, but allows that moment to remain for us to see again and again.
As an educator, I know the importance of guided repetition. Observe, repeat, think, repeat, observe and repeat. Photos allow us to repeatedly observe a scene that is temporary, existing for only a brief moment in time. By doing that, the photographer stops time, catching it, and then shares it so others can see and observe and reflect on what the photographer thought was worth capturing. The viewer might disagree. That's okay. Hopefully they will remember what they saw, even if they didn't think it worthwhile.

"Photo Collage"- Christine Ross Hopper- photo finish on paper- 11.5"x14"- $225
CHRISTINE ROSS HOPPER: As a mature student at Georgian College in Ontario, and at NSCAD University in Halifax, I knew that paper, ink, pencil and chalk pastels were my mediums for expression. After receiving my BFA I began exhibiting my work which at that time centred on a particular landscape that stimulated memories of childhood by the sea in Cornwall. My later imagery often arose from a sense of mystery, even the simplest images being influenced by dreams, studies of the I Ching and the works of C. G. Jung. The urge towards abstract imagery gave new impetus to work with colour and space, yet included fragments of photographs anchoring the work in the ‘real’ world. My work is in public and private collections including Dalhousie University, Art Bank of Nova Scotia and Canada Council.
